Amidst the day’s many tasks, I set aside some time to go to the laundromat. Across Miami—in businesses and enterprises throughout this cosmopolitan city—it is very common to find Cubans at work. The Latino community here is vast, and the Cuban population makes up one of its largest segments.

While my clothes were washing, I had the chance to chat with the woman running the shop. We discovered that we had both recently visited the island of Cuba, and our conversation turned to the shortages, blackouts, and severe limitations facing the country.

We discussed the ingenious ways people find solutions to the social and governmental crisis in this Caribbean archipelago, which has endured a dictatorship for over six decades. The conversation about daily life for Cubans naturally led to the topic of solar cookers and their implementation.

As an environmentally conscious choice, parabolic solar cookers offer an attractive alternative thanks to their speed and high heat-concentrating capacity. They use parabolic surfaces to reflect sunlight toward a focal point, generating temperatures high enough to cook food in less time.

Their distinctive, unusual design evokes a surreal blend of futuristic aesthetics and a throwback—or perhaps ancient machinery brought into the modern era. Visually, their shapes are captivating, drawing the eye with the ingenuity of the concept and its operation. It is a sort of spectacle that sparks curiosity through an experimental approach that visually integrates physical phenomena.

According to various sources, parabolic solar cookers are the most powerful of their kind; they do not require heat-retention systems, as they are made from durable, reflective materials such as polished metal or reflective sheeting.

In terms of cooking speed, the temperatures they reach are comparable to those of gas or electric stoves. They rapidly attain temperatures between 240°C and 280°C. Their advantages lie in energy savings and their eco-friendly nature, as they do not emit polluting gases. Furthermore, they can be adapted to various needs or lifestyles.

There is also the tubular solar cooker, which may feature integrated reflectors or be combined with a foldable solar cooker. It heats up rapidly, reaching temperatures between 180 and 240°C. Some solar water heaters also utilize vacuum glass to retain heat—keeping the exterior cool to prevent burns—though this type is more fragile, as the glass requires careful handling.

All these products serve as survival tools for situations that demand them—such as in Cuba, the “dark and enchanted” island, where any alternative is adopted and repurposed in the face of scarcity. They offer ingenious solutions for immediate needs, yet they fail to guarantee the population’s freedom.

Ultimately, I conclude that necessity often breeds ingenuity: one must find an alternative or perish. New perspectives also emerge, leading to more affordable designs and propelling the world toward a new era of functionality driven by the greatest energy source of all: the sun.
